Te Kura Kaupapa Māori O Ngāti Kahungunu O Te Wairoa
A sheltering, welcoming environment comprising flexible and well-connected learning spaces embodies the aspirations of a Māori school in a small provincial town. The design makes the most of modest means, deploying economical materials to telling effect. The extensive overhangs that protect outdoor teaching areas endow the school with a sense of generosity, and the fins supporting the super-sized eaves also have a suggestive effect, evoking the timber of a forest or perhaps a pā. Beyond the satisfaction of functional requirements, the school’s architecture sends a message to its students that their community values them and has high expectations of them.
