Maungawhau Tihi Boardwalk
Modest in its means, yet hugely transforming in its effects, the Maungawhau Tihi Boardwalk wonderfully traces out with the rust red of Corten mesh, hardwood decking and subtly detailed steel rails, a portion of the crater edge and the adjacent terraces once holding dwellings, gardens and storage rua for this significant Tāmaki Makaurau pā. Reinforcing the wāhi tapu status of this place, the boardwalk subtly directs visitors at the summit easing the effects of erosion and physical and cultural missteps. Its wandering path offers an intriguing up-close marrying of artifice and topography, with an enticing loop on the northern-most terrace providing a seated edge for lingering and socialising.
