2025 Wellington Architecture Awards Winner
Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness
Te Ngaengae Pool + Fitness transcends the mere replacement of an earthquake-prone predecessor, emerging as a transformative project that profoundly addresses the community's diverse needs. Beyond its function as a fitness facility, it serves as a vital gathering place, fostering community wellbeing. This ambitious project skillfully navigates a complex brief, delivering an anchor building that enriches the urban realm and seamlessly connects to the Naenae Mall. It achieves significant technical, cultural, and sustainability aspirations, notably earning Greenstar 5 certification. The project's commitment to sustainability is evident in the reuse of 80% of demolition material, with reclaimed elements like floorboards subtly weaving in the history of the original pool. Collaborating with artist Matthew McIntyre, the design incorporates refined interventions that reflect and celebrate the community it serves.
