Railley House
The original 1970s Robert Railley-designed house was a series of interlocking modernist boxes arranged on a sloping site: great bones, but a disconnect between internal living and the outdoor areas, in particular the large pool and patio surrounding it. Everything had grown shabby, and the roof was in worse condition than that. Daniel Marshall retained much of the original footprint but reorganised the main living areas onto the same level as the pool, took advantage of the need to replace the roof by adding a new floor to part of the house, and introduced a bold new colour scheme featuring orange and black. But he stuck closely to the style, restoring some remarkable wood-patterned ceilings and many other key elements, and creating a new coherent whole. There’s a very welcoming expansiveness to the house, and it’s delightfully offset by intimate spaces both inside and out. This is genuine splendour in the suburbs.
