Otago Polytechnic Student Village - Te Pa Tauira
Te Pā Tauira is a vertical student village that admirably attempts to follow the principles of the Living Building Challenge within its budget. There is much to like about this building – currently the largest CLT building by volume in Aotearoa – from the façade, a colourful “cloak of leaves” that is always shifting, to the pragmatic as well as aesthetically appealing exposed timber structural elements and oversized fixings. The interior highlights include a light-filled timber stairwell that splits well-planned wings and the inviting and sunny common rooms, the qualities of which are underscored by a limited palette of materials extended through an artistic collaboration with Simon Kaan.
