QT Hotel, Auckland
In a productive collaboration between architect and hotel interior designer, the QT Hotel has energetically and inventively remade the interior of an otherwise aging office building. The result is a luxuriously quirky hotel which exceeds the original building’s constraints with 35 distinct guest rooms. Departing from the formulaic layouts typical in hotels, those in the QT incorporate asymmetrical arrangements, mobile cabinetry and screens, and unconventional interactions between bathrooms and sleeping areas. Lobbies, passageways, and other collective facilities within the hotel are similarly idiosyncratic, with colliding colours, textures and contrary degrees of shadow and light. The result is rich, unexpected and constantly surprising. Oyster shell-like, the rudely rough exterior gives up a dazzlingly polished interior prompting of the imagination.
