Matapouri Beach House
Settled in a flat, seaside enclave at Matapouri Beach, this three-bedroom immaculately detailed house dynamically reworks a site without a large view or immediate privacy. Instead, the house creates its own centering richness via a geometrically complex play of parapets, planes and openings—a playfulness its architects link to the walking of lines explored by artist Paul Klee. Crossing through a blank timber façade leads to a modest lanai space followed by a long living area that opens onto a sheltered lawn and edge planting. Overhead clerestory windows and roof edges wonderfully draw the eye upward to a middle-distance culminating with a double storey of bedrooms at the rear.
