There is a distinct recognition of the importance of the ‘social’ evident in Otago University’s redevelopment of the former infamous 'Gardies' pub. The lower level provides a new living room to campus, complete with hearth, lounges, and leaners. Upstairs, the lofty exposed timber structure is respected and retained, and the clever insertion of a central plinth defines a collection of smaller spaces within.
