2010 Wellington Architecture Awards Winner

Zealandia Visitor Centre

Sited on the boundary between the protected remnants of pre-human Zealandia and the harsh modern world of Karori; the new Visitor Centre huddles up against the hillside trying to look inconspicuous despite its imposing height. The large floor plate requirement of the enclosed exhibition has been cleverly resolved by setting the faade back floor by floor. This has created a powerful and dramatic entry space leading to an exciting meander through the spacious complex. The architect has used a simple palette of materials with legible structures and sustainable environments to create a building that will significantly add to the user experience. It is an excellent accompaniment to a life sustaining sanctuary.
