2019 Canterbury Architecture Awards Winner

Sometimes you just know you are in an Athfield building. The material palette is pared right back, nearly to an industrial quality, but then the details are meticulous and the needs of the end-user have been so carefully considered. Rehua, a case in point, reveals tantalising glimpses of the original building; services are exposed, and there are honest and robust finishes, including concrete and timber. But there the fine details too, like the poutama-patterned plywood and other incredible integrated artworks, and vibrant graphics, floor-coverings, soft furnishings and bespoke joinery that all aid the provision of flexible spaces that support flexible, interactive learning.
