2019 Western Architecture Awards Winner

Fenton Street Art Collective

In 2017, this two-storey, 1920s building was sitting idle, unused and run down. Happily, two short years later, it is a bustling, flexible and contemporary space that accommodates a range of new uses, including a café, boutique distillery, writer’s den, office space and open-plan loft home. To achieve this, non-load bearing walls have been removed to open up space, strengthening steelwork has been inserted adroitly, a skylight has been added, original features restored, and extant materials re-used in ways that honour the history and stories of the original building. The result is a series of spacious, light-filled rooms where the concept of building re-use is celebrated.
