This pair of connected baches creates a relaxed setting for gatherings across multiple generations of family. The design carefully layers a front mission-style house with a second shed-like bach behind it. Flexibility is central to the project, with the more robust and retro-style accommodation at the rear able to operate independently or open up to connect with the larger bach below. Welcoming living spaces flow onto a deep verandah with views across Akaroa Harbour. Glazing is carefully placed to frame views while still bringing in plenty of natural light. The project responds sensitively to its surroundings and retains the relaxed hospitality and informal character of the traditional Kiwi bach.
