Kahurangi is a thoughtful and ambitious transformation of a former hospital laundry building into a calm and welcoming place of care for young people and their families. The project shows the value of adaptive reuse at a large scale, retaining the existing structure while completely reworking the interior spaces. The design carefully reduces the institutional feel of the original building, bringing in light, warmth, and clarity. One of the project’s strengths is the arrival sequence, which offers multiple pathways and moments of pause so young people can enter in a way that feels comfortable to them. This gentle approach supports wellbeing and shapes the experience from the outset. The result is a meaningful social and environmental transformation.
