Influenced by Gothic stylistic conventions, Mt Peel Homestead is a two storeyed multi-gabled structure with extensive verandah space and decorative lattice work. Built between 1865 and 1867 for J.B.A. Acland, its construction was supervised by Christchurch architect F.W. Strouts. Over time, internal alterations occurred and the current restoration and conservation work has seen a rationalization of some internal spaces while maintaining the essential heritage values of the homestead. As part of this conservation project, a significant structural upgrade has been sensitively undertaken. In the light of the recent seismic activity, this has undoubtedly ensured the longevity of what is a significant piece of Canterbury's social and architectural heritage.
