About the Festival
The Festival runs in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and other centres from 7-17 September 2017
Welcome to the inaugural Festival of Architecture – a celebration of architecture and design throughout New Zealand.
The Festival of Architecture is the successor to Architecture Week, which was a mostly Auckland-based series of events that was successfully run for many years by the New Zealand Institute of Architects’ Auckland Branch with the support of other like-minded professional and industry organisations.
This year’s Festival of Architecture sees the scope and ambition of Architecture Week widened, with events and activities designed to celebrate architecture – and its importance to the life of New Zealand’s towns and cities – scheduled for Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, as well as other regional centres. Thanks to the support of dormakaba, the Festival's Principal Sponsor, and other supporters, many of this year's events are free.
The Festival of Architecture programme is comprised of a variety of activities that will engage and inspire a wide audience. While some events will be attractive to those already in the design professions and building industry, those with a passing interest or who would like to find out more about architecture and design in New Zealand will find plenty to whet their appetite.
This year's programme is comprised of a range of mostly free activities: speakers, tours, exhibitions (including Future Islands, New Zealand’s 2016 exhibition at the Venice Architecture Biennale), open studios, design competitions, political debates (it is election year, after all) and workshops. Thanks to the kind support of GIB®, this year's international speaker sponsor, the Festival is bringing Los Angeles-based architects Catherine Johnson and Rebecca Rudolph, co-founders of Design, Bitches, to New Zealand for a series of free talks in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
