Mathematics and Statistics and Computer Science Building

The Mathematics and Statistics and Computer Science building is a new faculty building for the University of Canterbury with staff and administration facilities provided. The project is carefully structured to satisfy key learning, departmental and passive environmental requirements. The Building comprises two back to back buildings - the three storey staff towers and a four storey classroom block for undergraduate studies. These two elements are gathered together around a top lit atrium space which provides natural light deep into the building and provides a place for staff and students to meet. The classroom block has been designed to be as flexible as possible to accommodate future changes in use, technologies and working practices. A long span, column free structure, demountable partitioning systems and voids for the routing of services meet these demands. In addition the building employs a number of innovative passive environmental controls to reduce energy consumption and to provide a healthier environment in which to work. This is the first time in New Zealand that such ideas have been employed in a structure of this size and complexity. This complex award winning project has successfully demonstrated how a well resolved building with integrated services and structural components and passive energy system can not only produce immediate environmental and cost benefits to the building users and operators but can also produce a cost effective building well under the initial budget.
