Te Totara Primary School

Te Totara Primary School has been built as a brand new Primary School Development in a new Hamilton North sub division catering for 650 students. It became apparent for the need to create an architecture that stimulated critical thinking by its structure, spatial organisation, planning and responsible approach to energy efficiency and contextual environment. The design solution resulted in a school that is easily accessible, invigorating and engaging on various levels, with spaces dedicated for both school and community use. Contextually the new School addresses the immediate community area and its planned future growth, participating in its energising of the emerging urban fabric. The overall design inspires the neighbourhood and has become an invaluable landmark as well as an essential community facility. Compositionally the planning resulted in four classroom clusters, organised to encourage a sense of belonging and oriented to maximise the use of natural light, cross ventilation and facilitate an appropriate environmental design response. Each cluster consists of 4 classroom spaces and a common multi-purpose learning and recreation space. Overall the design incorporates flexible spaces, capable to accommodate a multitude of configurations and functions to achieve the best possible learning spaces for the needs of individual students through to multiple class groups.
