Chinese Methodist Church

Located in Merivale on the former St Albans Methodist Church site, the new Chinese Methodist Church is a prominent and modern place of worship. A pragmatic contribution to post earthquake Christchurch. Giving hierarchical emphasis on the chapel, entry, and steeple reinforces the procession into the worship space. Finishes of appropriate scale and quality ensure the importance of worship is easily understood both externally and internally, which is reinforced by the generous size of the building that resonates with music during the sermon. The stained glass windows and foundation stones from the former Church have also been retained and are displayed in the entry foyer to provide a connection to the history of the site. Two mono-pitched forms establish volume within the parish hall and chapel providing seating for up to 250 people. The design expresses, rather than conceals, structural laminated timber and steel elements in the fabric of the building and further defines spaces. Adjoining administration, classroom and amenity spaces support the churches day to day program and provide ultimate flexibility for users. Project authored whilst at WSP Architecture.
