Front and Back

This Arts and Crafts/Bungalow style house in Petone had been much altered over the years. Original features such as the entrance and porch had been lost, and the kitchen and living space was a 1970s horror. Practical requirements ruled out returning the house to its original plan, so instead we designed a new entrance that is convincing in its proportions and detail. Wright & Gray Architects Ltd planned and fully detailed the new kitchen-dining-living space, listening carefully to the owners in all aspects. We believe firmly that contemporary interior design can sit happily in traditional settings. “When we bought the house it lacked street appeal. We wanted to give it an entrance that looked welcoming, and we were delighted with the design John and his team came up with, which not only gave us a new entrance, but tied the whole front of the building into a coherent design. We’ve had lots of comments that it’s a big improvement. The other major issue was how to arrange the kitchen/dining/living space so that it worked for larger groups of people, but was still comfortable for everyday living for the two of us. We are really pleased with the finished product.”
