Newtown Playcentre has been a pack away centre for 50 years in a local hall, and have struggled to move into their own premises. Recently after 5 years of fundraising and purchasing their own property in Newtown they managed to complete the building fitout, but still needed a playground. Arise Church funded playground development, constructed by a local Wellington builder. Void involvement was designing and consent documentation for the playground, including complying with the NZS/AS standards for playground safety. Beyond this we were responsible for taking the playcentre brief, and applying this to the playcentre philosophy that play is learning. Located adjacent to the wet sand box and raised garden bed, a 'water zone' provides an area for children to access, learn about and play with water. A ramped loop bike path allows children to circulate the playground and along the way hollow pipes encircle the 'troll hole' which are painted bright colours becoming a musical instrument when banged with hands or mallets. Elsewhere benches include a bow with steering wheel, suggesting a boat and allowing imaginative play, and fruit trees teach food source and seasons.
