Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) is pleased to announce the appointment of James Blackburne as its 66th President.
Hailing from Tairāwhiti Gisborne and a director of Architects 44, Blackburne is widely respected for his contributions to architecture, heritage conservation and professional leadership. He succeeds Huia Reriti, who has served as the Institute’s Perehitini (President) since 2024.
A longstanding Institute member and appointed a Fellow in 2005, Blackburne has contributed to a range of governance and advocacy initiatives. Alongside his architectural practice, he has played a significant role in heritage protection through his involvement with Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga and Historic Places Aotearoa, reflecting a longstanding commitment to preserving and celebrating New Zealand’s built heritage.
As President, Blackburne will lead the Institute's governance and represent more than 4,000 members.
Blackburne said he was honoured to take on the role at an important time for both the profession and the built environment.
"Architecture has a vital role to play in shaping thriving, resilient communities. I look forward to working alongside our members, branches and partners to champion the value of good design, support a strong profession and help address the challenges facing our built environment and society."
NZIA Chief Executive Mark Abbot welcomed Blackburne's appointment.
"James brings a wealth of experience, a collaborative leadership style and a deep commitment to the public value of architecture. His understanding of both contemporary practice and our architectural heritage combine to create a focus on regeneration, which will be a great asset to the Institute."
Blackburne's presidency begins as the Institute continues to advocate for quality housing, climate-responsive design, heritage protection and the important contribution architects make to the social, cultural and economic wellbeing of Aotearoa New Zealand.
He was formally inaugurated today in a ceremony held at the Waikanae Surf Life Saving Club in Gisborne with family and friends.
