Call for Nominations: 2024 John Sutherland Practice Award

Do you know someone who has made an extraordinary contribution to the practice of architecture? Now is the time to nominate them for the 2024 John Sutherland Practice Award.

The John Sutherland Practice Award is open to all current members of Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand of Architects. It is an opportunity to recognise those that have shaped the practice of architecture through extraordinary ideas, approaches, research, ways of working, and innovation. Recipients can be individuals, studios or collectives that have left an indelible mark on the practice of architecture and inspired current and future generations within the profession.

In 2023, we awarded the John Sutherland Practice Award to ĀKAU Studio, a small Te Tai Tokerau Northland studio making a big impact in their community.

FAQ

What is the purpose of this award?

This award celebrates and acknowledges the influence and impact of individuals, groups or collectives to the practice of architecture and the built environment. It recognises a wide range of architectural endeavours, including management, project delivery, professional practice, research, business practices and building science. The award also recognises thinking skills and social and digital innovation.

Who is eligible to receive the John Sutherland Practice Award?

The recipient must be a current member of Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects. It is open to all current members – academics, architects, retired, graduates, students and affiliates. It could be awarded to a sole practitioner or a large practice, an academic or a collective.

Who can nominate a person, collective and/or practice for the John Sutherland Award?

Nominations can be received from anyone: members of Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects or non-members.

What is the timeframe for nominations?

Nominations are open from 2 September to 3pm, 7 October 2024.

Who has been awarded the John Sutherland Practice Award in the past?

In 2023, ĀKAU Studio received the award. In 2022, the Institute awarded the inaugural award to A+W NZ Architecture in Women

What is the cost to enter?

There is no cost. Nominations to the John Sutherland Practice Award are free for both members and non-members.

Is my nomination confidential?

Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects keeps all data strictly confidential, with only the jury and supporting roles in the National Office having access to this data, and purely for the purposes of the judging process.

What’s the deal with disclosure?

What would cause disqualification of a nomination?

Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects reserves the right to disqualify a nomination at any time during the process if the jury determines that:

 

● The entry or nominee breaches or otherwise fails to meet or observe the above stated eligibility criteria or requirements.

● False or misleading information has been intentionally provided.

What is the jury criteria for the John Sutherland Award?

The jury criteria celebrates the impact individuals, groups or collectives have had on the practice of architecture. It recognises those who:

 

●  Have demonstrably influenced the practice of architecture in Aotearoa New Zealand.

●  Have made profound contributions to the practice of architecture and their impact is enduring.

●  Are a current member of Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects.

 

Note: Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects reserves the right to decline to make an award in any given year.
