Continuing Professional Development

The CPD Provider Network

Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects is committed to providing members with high-quality programmes for Continuing Professional Development.

Why do Architects need CPD points?

In Aotearoa New Zealand, only a person who is a Registered Architect can describe themself as a Registered Architect. To maintain that title, individuals must earn Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points to prove their competency.

The Registered Architects Act states that to meet the minimum standard for continued registration, a person who is currently registered must demonstrate that:

• They can practice competently in their practice area to the standard of a registered architect; and

• They have taken reasonable steps to maintain the currency of their architectural knowledge and skills since the last assessment

Registered Architects meet this standard if, over a five-year period, they achieve a total of 1,000 CPD points, including a minimum of 100 points in each of the following four Units of Competency:

1 Design

2 Documentation

3 Project Management

4 Practice Management

In addition, a fifth category titled Core Professional Development covers subject areas that are relevant to all architects, regardless of the work they do.

The average one-hour CPD session, held by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects, is worth 10 CPD points.

— Jade Rouse Bollee, Nuralite

Hosting our first Emerge Webinar enabled us to talk to a diverse range of young architects we wouldn’t usually reach. We found them to be highly engaged and receptive to the topic of Continuous Insulation and H1 requirements. We found the Institute incredibly helpful in facilitating the session and are looking forward to our next webinar.

— Renée Williamson, Former Co-opted Emerge Director, Te Kāhui Whaihanga

The Emerge audience is enjoying learning about fundamental principles and basic product knowledge. Understanding the basics helps to set a foundation of knowledge to build upon. We are excited to see more webinars from Te Kāhui Whaihanga CPD providers in 2023.

— Victoria Elvin, Steel & Tube

Steel & Tube were delighted to offer the Steel & Tube Graduate series of lectures on roofing, cladding and ComFlor as part of the Emerge Webinar series. Our contribution was designed as a ‘101 class’ for long-run metal roofing and cladding and composite steel decking...

— Victoria Elvin, Steel & Tube

The series covered a wide variety of topics – from industry jargon, materials, profiles, environments, and best practice – with an aim of educating to create accurate and informed specification. The response was fantastic, with over 350 registrations for the fourlecture series. To add value, Steel & Tube offered four online help desks so graduates could ask questions they may not wish to ask on a webinar and bring their own project examples for discussion. We were delighted with the engagement from attendees to our technical helplines and really feel as though we are connecting and assisting our clients (the specifier) in their projects.
