2022 Auckland Architecture Awards Winner

Te Wānanga

Te Wānanga transforms a historically significant urban harbour edge, drawing into awareness not just those elements linked to colonial land reclamation, but the broader ecological richness it co-opted. Formed as an irregularly shaped platform suspended out beyond the original sea wall, this new public space—itself conceived of as “a tidal shelf”—offers numerous ways to experience the water’s edge, whether shaded by native planting, viewing through various apertures to the harbour below, or by being suspended above it on woven sures. Richly playful in its use of materials, surface finishes, and shadow patterning, it offers an array of spaces for gathering. Utilising a broad-based collaboration of specialists, artists and community stakeholders, the project is remarkable for its participatory approach and vision.
