2025 Western Architecture Awards Winner
Te Āhuru Mōwai
Reimagined to meet the needs of a contemporary library, the existing whare pukapuka has been extended toward the street, activating its edges and drawing the public into its functions. A central ‘internal street’ forms a strong axis between dual entries, marking the transition between old and new and organising spaces for both public and private use. The mass timber structure continues the original grid, extruding to express the building’s tectonics on the street-facing elevations. Timber screens and balustrades—finely detailed yet understated—provide the only embellishment. A fitting civic gesture, this building is a valued asset to the people of Feilding and a testament to thoughtful design.
