2025 Nelson/Marlborough Architecture Awards Winner
Punangairi Visitor Centre
A building that weaves itself around both geological formations and established trees; the care that was taken to fit within the surrounding landscape is impressive. It is not often that you get to see a significant public building in such a small community, but the architects have delivered one that is fitting to the natural beauty of the surrounding environment. The design of the pillars harmonises with the straightness of the nīkau palm trees that were left in the landscape, accommodating the building with a sense of flexibility to embrace the existing nature around it. Additionally, the green roof, more appreciated by birds than the human eye, is a commendable consideration that speaks to the care for the site and the surrounding nature.
