2025 Western Architecture Awards Winner
Brooklands House
The project involved playfully transforming the communal spaces of a two-storey, 1940s Art Deco state house. The design emphasises outdoor connections and creates quiet, calming areas where the children can retreat while remaining close to family activities. Functional spaces are repositioned centrally, allowing the eastern and northern façades to open to park views and northern light, enhancing warmth and vibrancy within the home. A striking perforated steel hanging staircase located in a northeast lightwell channels filtered light into the kitchen and incorporates a protected reading nook underneath—a calming, sheltered space for the children that maintains their connection with the household. The client’s engineering background influenced key design features, such as the suspended staircase and exterior canopies, while material choices reflect the children’s needs—prioritising robust, tranquil finishes that offer a sense of durability and calmness
