2025 Hawkes Bay/Gisborne Architecture Awards Winner

Foodeast – Haumako

Foodeast – Haumako is a nationally significant food innovation hub that brings together industry, community, and culture in the heart of Heretaunga Hastings. Developed through a public-private partnership with regional and government support, Foodeast provides a future-focused base for Aotearoa’s agri-food sector. Named Haumako, meaning fertility or richness, the project honours a narrative gifted by local hapū elder Ngahiwi Tomoana woven through the design’s colour palette. The architecture of Foodeast – Haumako is both infrastructure and a landmark of innovation, enabling the sharing of knowledge and collaboration. The project comprises two gabled buildings referencing the rural shed vernacular: one for flexible office tenancies and shared conferencing facilities; the other, a set of adaptable industrial tenancies. Durable materials, cost-effective construction, and a simple structural approach ensure longevity and adaptability.
