2025 Wellington Architecture Awards Winner
The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Restoration
This exemplary restoration marks the culmination of a long and determined journey for the Cathedral community. A highly technical and complex heritage project, it has required immense care, deep architectural knowledge, and sensitive judgement. Seismic upgrades, moisture remediation, and fabric repairs have been deftly integrated to retain the integrity of this Category I landmark. Inside, the spaces have been subtly rebalanced – calm, uplifting, and newly aligned with both historic and contemporary liturgical practice. Unexpected discoveries were thoughtfully embraced, adding richness to the Cathedral’s ongoing story. The result is a dignified, enduring renewal of Wellington’s Catholic heart.
