A House at the Beach, Te Horo
The Te Horo Bach designed by Gordon Moller for his family in the mid-1980s remains an inspiring work of architecture that makes a strong connection to the architect’s original concept. The house, a gathering of spaces strongly connected to sea, sky and land, grouped around a platform that can be open or resilient to the unpredictable and forceful weather of this Kapiti beach, now functions as a permanent campsite for an itinerant family. Douglas fir, jarrah and cedar joinery contrast richly with plastered and painted concrete, blockwork, and quarry tiles. This is an earthy and robust construction which has weathered many storms.
