Eight Thirty Roastery

It’s harder than it looks to fit out an empty space with minimalist design, but with the Eight Thirty Roastery on Anzac Ave, Glamuzina offer a deeply satisfying little masterclass in how to go about it. The deep rectangular shape in an old warehouse building has been cleaned up, painted a creamy near-white above the line and dark near-black below, with the original and much-trammelled concrete floor polished back into service. An enormous new GRC counter with a trapezoidal near end runs most of the length of the space, floating above the floor on cylindrical feet. It boasts two beautiful coffee machines, complete with custom-made wooden handles and lids. The roasting operation takes place in full view at the rear, while towards the front custom-made cafe furniture features intriguing wire latticework. It’s all immensely pleasing to the eye, relaxing to be in, and quietly humming with the sense of good work underway. The smell of the roast helps, of course, but it’s the architecture that truly satisfies.
