Innovations in social housing, sustainability, and city-making all feature in architecture on display at the Te Kāhui Whaihanga Auckland Awards in Tāmaki Makaurau tonight.
“We were thrilled by the projects we encountered” said jury convenor, Belinda George of Belinda George Architects. “Despite the travails of a pandemic and a severely stressed building sector, it is abundantly evident that architecture is alive and thriving in the Auckland region”, she added.
Four projects particularly stood out to her and the jury: HomeGround by Stevens Lawson Architects; Rangiputa Bach and Matapouri Beach House, both by Herbst Architects; and Under Ivy by Jack McKinney Architects.
HomeGround, the new multistorey remaking of the City Mission’s humble Hobson Street home stands, as Belinda and the jury recognised, as a long-pursued labour of love. It demonstrates a fund-raising acumen and careful spend that will deliver over time a remaking of lives and a revitalisation of this part of the city.
“It’s so heartening to see a facility of this kind for Auckland, one that is absolutely rich in social possibility, architecture, heritage and urbanism. It showcases a compelling vision and ethos for Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland – it is aroha literally made solid,” Belinda said.
The jury were also impressed with Rangiputa Bach, which beautifully mixes holiday routines with the vastness of sky and sea, while the Matapouri Beach House immaculately details a house without larger outlook or immediate privacy.
Also of note was Kōtukutuku Kāinga by TOA Architects. The jury found an innovative and richly evolved cultural response to the task of multi-unit housing and establishment of Kāinga. The complex beautifully integrates individual dwellings, a shared courtyard and collective gardens, a large whānau space and a whare manaaki.
As the jury concluded, "journeying from the Hunua Ranges in the south to the top of Northland and out to the Gulf Islands, it has been an utter privilege to experience the ingenuity and resourcefulness of architects in their quest to fulfil the needs and dreams of those building in these difficult times”.
