Richard Naish Awarded 2026 Gold Medal

Auckland architect Richard Naish of RTA Studio has been named the recipient of the 2026 Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Gold Medal.

 

The Gold Medal is the Institute’s highest individual honour. Awarded annually, it recognises an architect who has made an outstanding and lasting contribution to the practice, development and advancement of architecture in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Naish founded RTA Studio in 1999 and has since developed an acclaimed body of work spanning residential, commercial, hospitality, education and urban projects. His architecture is distinguished by its strong sense of place, inventive use of form and material, and thoughtful response to the cultural and physical character of Aotearoa.

“I am very honoured to receive the 2026 NZIA Gold Medal and I am truly humbled when I consider the esteemed company that surrounds this accolade. I am very thankful to all the RTA Studio team and our great clients that have all supported and contributed to the body of work that represents this point of my practice,” says Naish.

The 2026 NZIA Gold Medal celebrates Naish’s sustained commitment to design excellence and the significant contribution he and RTA Studio have made to New Zealand architecture.

The award was presented at the 2026 in:situ Conference + CAA Awards Gala Dinner in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
