The existing house had survived any major builders refit, and the site with its rim of Pohutukawas had also avoided any eighties attitude to broaden the view. Now it was our turn to modify with style and resist the urge to go big. The site coverage and coastal zoning meant any major addition was impossible so the pressure was on to do the seamless integration number. Building with site, new with old, hard lines with soft edges. We did it... and no one would know. The house still receives a filtered morning sun and looks out upon moonlit waters, and its new owners revel in the splendour of an Auckland lifestyle abode. "Just like living at the beach.." they say... with the addition of the art and the collections from their travels, of course. Interiors were kept to this simple theme, and the lighting restrained also to make the most of the changes outside. Over all extensive modernisation was carried out to suit a business family with teenagers at home, within the confines of a well established, coastal suburban site.
